Type of drumcircles you are involved in:
2o+ years with Music for People, an organization founded by cellist David Darling that promotes improvised music for everyone. Drum circles occur regularly at MfP events, along with free improv on all other instruments. I also attend local drum circles and recently was invited to Arthur Hull's FRAP in Maryland, USA.
Your most fantastic drumcircle experience to date.
Many - 1984 with Paul Winter on his farm, along with 60 other musicians from around the US drumming and singing in a Tipi and at the riverside for a week; 2006 with a Hang Drum ensemble of 20; classes at Omega Institute with Baba Olatunji; drumming at home with my wife and children....

Here are some music samples:

I put two music samples on the playlist: One is a good example of what happens at Music for People events, the other is a song I wrote about what happened in New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina two years ago. The first example: Hang Drum, Guitar, Violin and Voice - an improvised quartet from a recent Music for People event outside Philadelpia, PA, USA. Ron Kravitz on Hang, Lynn Miller on voice, Frances Miller on violin, Jim Oshinsky on guitar. The ensemble takes the first 30 seconds or so to pla… Continue

I am doing some more writing about how to use the symbols from Arthur Hull's Drum Circle Facilitation book with groups that include all sorts of non-percussion instruments. e-mail me to see drafts as this writing progresses.

Hello Lori - Yes, MfP has a book that outlines just about all of the main activities that go on in the workshops, the activities we suggest for at-home practice, guidelines for how to facilitate these activities in groups, and suggestions for how to bring this kind of work into schools. It is called "Return to Child," and info is available at www.returntochild.com. Arthur Hull's review of the book is on that website. Julie Lyonn Lieberman's books and Allauadin Mathieu's books are worth looking at as well. They describe improvisation mindsets for instrumentalists of all walks. For vocalists, Susan Elizabeth Hale has a book called Song and Silence.

Hello Jim,

May I please add you to my list of friends? I am glad to find out more about music for people, about which i have heard good things, from several people who either attended or knew someone who did.

I was in San Antonio this summer, for example, and talked to Patsy Lawry, who spoke very highly of the training. We both expressed regret that it is mostly based only in New England. If my memory serves me well, Anita Rizley, too, the Children's services coordinator for Austin Public Library, is a Music for People person..

I believe that if you guys ever wanted to do trainings in Texas, it might be fertile ground for you here..anyway, TIA for the friend add, and I look forward to hearing more.

i play a little of everything too, so mfp would be great fun beyond drum circling...
peace to you - and thanks for sharing the music!
