Drumcircle Facilitator's Forum

Creating connection with rhythm

would be good to have a forum just for circle ideas and inspirations, those in the moment facilitations that worked or not...

in that sense I would love to hear from anyone who has done a circle in a prison. I am booked up to do a small circle for a young offenders prison and would love some ideas from fellow facilitators... especially if you have done one in a prison...

I'm kinda coming from the idea of creating music by working together and individual expression within the group to make a beautiful song.

The group might be quite small so it could be fun. I'm really looking forward to it.

Sounds like a great approach to me. I have done many groups with young people one step away from prison. I go with a blank sheet and see what we can fill it with. I know that any expectations or plans will get kicked out of court in two minutes. I love the intensity of interaction you can create.
My approach is to be really relaxed. maybe start a beat maybe show a rhythm but mainly see what they can do and find ways of bringing others into it.
The queen song "we will we will rock you " usually goes down well just get that bass beat going and they can't resist yelling it out.

I am starting a Junk Percussion Community Circle tonight in Middletown CT. I have gotten lots of positive response that I hope will translate into actual attendance. I will give a report once I get home as to the turnout and experience as a whole.

The basic idea is that everything is a drum and there are lots of really cool sounding things that we toss out all the time. Any instruments must be, or be made from materials found, scrounged, recycled or repurposed into a drum. The circle is open to all ages with anyone over 13 asked to pay a $5 donation to cover the fee for the site. The intent is to bring people together with rhythm in unexpected ways and produce a sound unlike any other they may have heard before.

Wish me luck!
